Bill Cosby had it right. The Americans wore dark clothes, hid behind rocks and trees, and attacked at night, and the British wore bright red coats and marched in a straight line! :dumbass:

Happy 4th of July...fire up the barbecue. :vhappy2:

I had crumpets (not the high class type) for breakfast this morning...while watching the Wimbledon finals as a matter of fact. Rob, if Trader Joe's ever makes it into the Cheesehead Outback (probably six months after Starbucks gets there) they have their own brand of crumpets, eight for $1.99 (available in plain and blueberry).

And now for the crucial question.

Does an American crumpet bear any resemblance to an English one?

Somehow I doubt it, and not just because you have 'blueberry ones' ... which are quite unimaginable!

(We do however have blueberry muffins ... ;) )

Btw, Wimbledon was bloody amazing this year, even without crumpets (or muffins)!

So in that case you're saying that a crumpet is a lot like a muffin. Paula made cornmeal muffins just the other day. Blueberry is good too.
TJ, that little breakfast you had must have turned into lunch and then dinner...I had no idea that match was on until it was about over. I was in a local bar and they had it on TV. It was then that I knew it was on.
Sounds as though I missed a good one.

Without wishing to rub it in, Boris Becker hazarded the opinion that it was the finest tennis match he had ever seen.

:tomato:

NO! (English) crumpets are totally unlike (English) muffins! And American muffins (I think) are quite different again!

The blueberry muffins we get are quite deep soft & spongy 'cupcakes' studded with blueberries, which you eat cold ... these relatively new arrivals on our culinary scene I deduce to be what you are familiar with across the water. They are yummy.

However, English muffins are savoury, about 1-3 cms thick, somewhat tough and chewy, and you toasted them, split and butter them, maybe with a filling, and eat them hot. I am not a great fan.

English crumpets are about 2 cms thick, very chewy, but full of 2 mm holes, although the bases are solid. You toast them (both sides), spread butter on the top (which melts and drips down through the holes!), eat them hot, and they are yummy! You can have them savoury or sweet, maybe with a little salt on top, or some marmite, or jam, or marmalade.

In fact I think I'll go and get some right now for lunch!!

In this, as in all things, I refer you to wikipedia, where you will see a very appetising photo!

Yes, those are exactly the type of crumpet I had. They are "British Style" and there is a Union Jack and a drawing of the Tower Bridge on the label just to let everyone know they are "authentic." Not sure who they subcontract to make them. The blueberry ones are so-so; they taste a little odd and don't really go well with orange marmalade.

Yes that tennis match is now being billed as the greatest ever. Sad part is, about fifteen minutes into the final rain delay, and after they had cut away to interviews of olympic hopefuls and other news, I gave up, certain they wouldn't resume the match so late, and went out for a walk. Needless to say I was shocked when I returned to find out not only had they finished, but how dramatically it ended! :dumbass:
